It needs a preface only when the author wants it to have a preface. Usually it's a good idea. Or just have an introduction.

When it's being authored by an utter buffoon, "it does it not."

A preface is required when you want to justify your reasons for writing your autobiography in the first place.

It doesn't, really. It's obvious you haven't read the twenty we recommended at least a year ago. Have you read any? Did they have prefaces? What did the prefaces do that the autobiography could not?

    Lazy, non-writing, diaper fetish man.

A preface is a tool for setting everything else up. In an Autobiography it is a synopsis the tale to come and give you a place to thank others

When you have something to say. That might be why an autobiography might be of relevance to a reader who is about to invest time in reading it, or some context as to why it is worth recording and publishing the particular work.
