half and half.
The tv has liquid in the screen part of it, liquid crystal that gets corona charged and displays an image on the screen using a rainbow effect. This is the current generation screen tvs.
The tv used to have gas in the screen, that was called a plasma gas which when received a corona charge, it made an image on the screen and also provided light to the screen. It used the same effect as the aurora borealis which is also caused by plasma gas. This was the first generation of flat panel screen tvs.
traditional box tvs, had phosphor layer that received a corona charge from the light guns in the back and made the phosphor glow and also produced a raster image on the screen, using a cone filter.
The electronics enables the image to be made, the corona charge would cause the image on the screen to form.
