    boolean... yes

  • In computer programming, the return type (or result type) defines and constrains the data type of the value returned from a subroutine or method. In many programming languages (especially statically-typed programming languages such as C, C++, Java) the return type must be explicitly specified when declaring a function.

Boolean.  Meaning a returns true or false (0 or 1) depending on whether or not the value given to it is of data type string.

It depends which language you are using.  I would expect it to be Boolean (true or false).
