Why do they put caffeine in soft drinks?

Update:

Would soda be any different without caffeine? Is there any reason to add caffeine to soda?

Because a lot of people drink soft drinks for the caffeine. They have a few caffeine free options if you can't handle the caffeine.

Because it increases consumption of the product since caffeine is addictive.

It encourages (over)consumption, particularly of drinks some might not drink if w/out caffeine.

I speak from experience working events where a customer might ask, "So what do you have

with caffeine?" among n/a drinks, consequently choosing one with it rather than one without.
