If Covid-19 infects people for an average of 21 days, why are we potentially looking at a 6 month UK lockdown?

If we are all self isolating, the chances of reinfection are unlikely if everyone is taking precautionary measures.

Here in the U.S.A., our lockdown is stupid. they suggest 14 days. Yet we are not really locked down. So every day we expose our selves in public starts another 14 days. Then another 14 days, then another, and on and on. I would rather get sick with this virus and deal with it than keep putting up with this merry go round.

    IF see that word IF

    IF A then B

the problem is there is not 100% compliance. Mistakes accidents a torn protective suit happen.

average of  means what exactly. Some are faster some are slower.

You need to keep restarting your countdown each time the last person was infected.

Do you imagine that lockdown is completely reliable amongst druggies and criminals? The so-called herd immunity will still be needed.

Unlikely doesn't mean it won't happen. The point of the lockdown is to slow down the spread of the virus so it doesn't knock out essential services and overwhelms the healthcare. If you are lucky,  it will take several months for enough people to acquire immunity. If too many people disregard the lockdown, You will lose a lot of lives in the next month

People don't get infected on the same day and have the same incubation or infection period... if one person is infected  goes out and spreads that infection the exposure and symptom onset windows  can be 5 -15 days before the next batch of people even realise they are infected and in that time they have exposed dozens of new people to the virus

    Because

it doesn't instantly infect the entire population.

    The disease spreads over time

    and the possibility exists

that it will continue to spread

(people will continue to get infected)

    for months.

One person infects number 2 who takes over a week to show symptoms. That person infects at least 2 more, then that person affects 4 more and so on. This goes on for weeks, this is how it spreads.

There isn't an end date, the review is in a couple of weeks but that's only looking at it, if the deaths are still going up Boris won't change it.
