Why did Microsoft change the name Office 365 to Microsoft 365?

They didn't.  The two aren't the same offering.  Microsoft 355 includes Office 365 plus other things like Skype for Business and Sharepoint.

There are other "office" packages out there, including free ones like OpenOffice and LibreOffice.

I think that "office" has become a generic name by now, and MS is trying to re-establish their office product as "theirs", and not sound the same as those "free" ones.

Theories range from rather cynical effort to some sort of internalized restructuring of the brand in order to get their name in forefront.

I personally prefer Office name as opposed to Microsoft for the package. Back in its peak in 97 it set standards for virtual office management (albeit ripping off many things from competition).
