Does the length of the coil on circular knitting needles matter?

I have never used circular needles before and am trying to follow a pattern for socks. The needles I am using are the same as what the pattern recommends but the coil is too long so that I can't spread the stitches over the two needles. Is this a problem? Would it be possible to shorten the coil?

  • Yes, if the coil is too long or to short, that may make it difficult to manage your project, or to keep it from falling off the needles. I would use double pointed needles instead. Shortening the coil, not that I know of. But there are circular needle kits that come with different length coils. These are called interchangeable circular needle kits. Or you can buy a circular needle with a very short coil.
