Why are crayons sold in different colors?

Because people like to use Different Colors Different Colors work for Different things

For a 7 or 8 year old, 144 colors is
a lot more exciting and fun than the standard 8 colors, but 8 colors is a lot better than one color. Pink was NOT one of the 8 colors 60 years ago. Crayola's marketing people obviously understood that 127 years ago.
