How far is the sun from the earth?
How far is it
- ANDYLv 52 months agoFavourite answer
The Earth does not orbit assuming a perfect circle around the sun─it is elliptical. It goes from a nearest distance of about 147 million km to a farthest distance of about 152 million km. When it is nearest, it is winter; farthest, summer─many people think it's the opposite.
The 5 million difference between the maximum and the minimum distances is not fixed at the same location in space. Earth makes an orbit around the sun in one year, but when it reaches its starting point, it is not at the same place in space where it had started that orbit. And this happens to each orbit around the sun. This is only to let you know that the ellipse is not fixed in one place, but moves around every year. Distances from the sun, however, do not change.

The average distance of the Sun from the Earth is 92.96 million miles (93,000,000 miles) or 149.6 million (150,000,000 kilometer)s...Earth's orbit is slightly elliptical, (0.167 obliquity (ellipticity), so ths Earth is 3.84 million miles or 5 million miles closer to the Sun around January 2-3 at perihelion than it around July. 3-4 at aphelion. Earth's distance from the Sun is NOT the reason for the Earth's seasons...

By the way, Jupiter is about 5 AU from the Sun,
Saturn about 10 AU,
Uranus about 20 AU, and
Neptune about 30 AU
nearest star in the night sky, Proxima Centauri about 268,395 AU
distance to the center of our Milky Way galaxy about 1.72 billion AU.

About a hundred yards further >>>> that-a-way.

It is a hundred million miles away. That is about four hundred times further than the moon.Your grandparents and great grandparents were aware of this. But somehow the tide of misinformation riding on the internet has led to the wisdom of the ancients being replaced with nonsense.
