Did Britain's Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother have any clue as to the cost of things?

The queen mother ordered a hat that was to be adorned with very, very expensive feathers. The milliner insisted that the lady-in-waiting who presented the finished hat to the queen mother tell the queen mother how much the hat cost.

When the hat was presented to the queen mother and the lady-in-waiting told her the cost of the hat, the queen mother's reply was "I wish to order two more hats just like this one."

The Queen Mother knew that she was quite well-off and that things would be paid. That is all that she needed to know. Her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II did try to talk to her mother about her spending in the later years, but always would pay any overdraft her mother incurred.

No idea to be honest. Don’t think it really matters. Their reality is far different to ours anyway. Whether they know the price or not they will never have to want for anything.

Why would she care if the feathers were expensive? She could afford whatever she wanted.

  • She may have known prices, but when you have apparently unlimited wealth then it loses any meaning.

It has long been established that cost is not an issue regarding what the royal family want. They never ask dollar amounts because a lot of the time, if the object they ask for is not gifted to them, they will just pay the price without wanting to know what it was. I read that Queen Mary would often visit others who were in her social circle, and if she mentioned a particular thing in that person's home as being remarkable or nice or what have you, it was understood that that object was to be delivered to the palace. She would never SAY she wanted it, but it was your obligation to make sure she was given it.

That wasn't the Queen Mother, although perhaps she was like that, but Queen Victoria would behave like that.

When you have virtually unlimited wealth, the price of things doesn't really matter. Even if she knew the price of a dozen chicken eggs vs. the price of a dozen ostrich eggs, it wouldn't have any effect on her choice of breakfast.
