Hamsters are actually relatively clean animals. When their cage stinks, it's not because of them. They groom themselves, similar to the way cats do and use a sand bath occasionally. If they are given a litter dish, they will urinate in it as they prefer to contain their pee in one area instead of all over the cage. Their cages stink because of their pee, which reeks of ammonia. The hamster itself isn't gross, although an unclean cage is.
