Thai is similar to Lao but not close enough for speakers of either to understand each other. Khmer is different.

It’s actually quite easy for the Lao to understand fluent Thai. Thai media is all they watch. In reverse a Thai should be able to pick up some Lao with effort involved

Thailand and Cambodia and Laos all have the same culture.   Thai and Lao are very similar.   Cambodian does shares a few similar words with the Thai language, but not to a point of understanding each other language like Lao & Thai.

  • They are similar along with the border areas of the countries.  Lao is the language of the country, Laos, a neighbor to Thailand. ... Lao and Thai languages are very similar to each other. In fact, the two languages are linguistically similar, though their writing script varies a bit. Thai is the native language of Thailand and is spoken in a minority in Cambodia.  Khmer differs from neighboring languages such as Thai, Burmese, and Lao
