What should a substitute teacher do to get middle school students interested in learning?

Subs cannot interest students in their regular subjects. Subs have to branch off into some entertaining topic to get students' attention, then drop in something or other about schoolwork.

incorporate their culture into learning.
We rapped the 9 planets in elementary school back in the 1990s. We cartooned the no smoking ad campaigns. get my drift? They want pop culture and media integrated in learning activities.

the first thing, imho, is to remind them that they'll likely be seeing you again and again ... as long as they're in this school, there's chance on any day that they might get you. And, of course, daily participation notes, including names and details of events, are left for their regular teacher
