What does being a director and a producer of a film involve?

How closely do the two collaborate? Is one regarded as more senior than the other?

Producer gives the money to make the movie, and the director leads the creation of the movie.

How close do the two collaborate? Only in terms of money like for actor salaries, travel, props for the movie.

The producer is the owner of the film. The director is the key employee, making sure the film is made correctly.

The producer is the money guy.  They create the budget, obtain financing and oversee the cost of production and distribution.   Ultimately it is the budget that determines what can and can't be done for the film.

The director is the artistic leader.  He works on getting the script from the page to the screen.  Planning how to film each scene and working with actors and crew to ensure the daily work done on the film is smooth and results in usable finished product.   After filming they combine the takes that they like best and work with editors and other technical workers to make the final look and feel of the movie.
