The sum of three numbers is 54.

The second number is twice the first and four less than the third.

What is the third number?

x + y + z = 54

2x = y

y = z - 4

z = 2x + 4

x + 2x + 2x = 50

x = 10

z = 24

The third number is 24.

Let F be the first number.

The 2nd number is 2F.

The 3rd number is 2F + 4.

If F + 2F + 2F + 4 = 54, evidently F is 10 and therefore the 3rd number is 24.

x = first number; 2x = second number; 2x + 4 = third number.

Hence:

x + 2x + 2x + 4 = 54 => 5x + 4 = 54 => 5x = 54 - 4 => 5x = 50 => x = 50/5 = 10.

First number = 10; Second number = 2 * 10 = 20; Third number = 2 * 10 + 4 = 24.
