The wood- charcoal is the product of extracting most/all impurities from the wood, so produces more smoke. Charcoal burns hotter and is less smoky.

It depends on the kind of wood, the kind of charcoal, and the conditions under which they are burned.

Smoke is a lack of combustion of the carbon in the wood or charcoal. That means the amount of air (oxygen) determines which smokes the most. Depending on how the wood or charcoal is situated will determine which has the most smoke.

    .

Having said that, charcoal is almost pure carbon so it tends to burn cleaner as you see with charcoal briquettes when grilling.

"Smoke is a lack of combustion of the carbon". Not quite. A lot of it is WATER. lack of combustion of carbon causes carbonmonoxide - which is colourless and has no smell

    Wood can produce more

Charcoal would at the start, but as soon as the fire is going properly, charcoal is OK

Wood will produce more smoke, as well as more harmful smoke.  However the smoke can add distinct flavor, which is why it is often used in addition to coal when smoking meats.
