Do knockouts occur mainly when you hit the cerebellum?

    Despite being a neuroscientist studying neurotrauma, i do not know the answer from a scientific perspective. However my brief google search suggested that a loss of consciousness occurs following head trauma from unorganized and chaotic bioelectric discharge from neurons that scrambles normal processes. These ionic changes in the environment can take several seconds to minutes to resolve, and the resulting inflammation and swelling can have lasting and permanent damage.

    I can, however, answer this question from a practical standpoint from my 15+ years as a fighter having both knocked out and been knocked out many times. Honestly a hit to the cerebellum is probably not the most effective way. The best way to truly knock someone out is to accelerate the head in as many directions as possible, as fast as possible. The term "impulse" is used to describe the acceleration of an object over time.

    With that being said, you could punch someone with 100 lbs of force and barely do any damage, but also punch someone with 5 lbs of force and knock someone out. It just depends how the force is applied. A hit on the chin in a slightly up, forward, and side direction will accelerate the head in all possible 3-D planes as it will apply linear force up, to the side, and back, which will force the head to rotate along its axis. This impulse in so many directions makes a hit to the chin so much more devastating than square to the face or head. In addition, the chin is such an important tool for fighting for the next couple of reasons. 1) the chin is essentially a lever hanging from the face which allows the striker to exert an amplified amount of force to accelerate the head with less total power. This is simple mechanical advantage, the same way its easier to open a door at the handle than it is closer to the hinge. 2) the chin is an articulated joint, meaning muscles are required to keep it stable. There are reflexes in the body that will inhibit other muscles regulating a joint when a muscle becomes overloaded. Overloading the jaw muscles with a punch will inhibit neck muscles that stabilize the head during impact. By inhibiting the neck muscles you can effectively destabilize the head and accelerate it faster increasing the likelyhood of a knockout.

    If you watch highlight reals of knockouts you will notice that so many of the successful knockouts come from small taps to the chin, despite watching the same dudes pound each other on the head for rounds after rounds without any major effects. Because of the susceptibility of the chin, fighters will protect it in the following ways. 1) Tuck the chin, this increases the likelihood that a punch will hit the face or top of the head which does nothing more than hurt. 2) hands up to deflect the force to your hands or other parts of the face. 3) bite down and clench the jaw. This stabilizes the jaw in case it does get hit and can reduce likelihood of a knockout, and 4) if on the ground keep the head on the ground. This limits "bouncing" of the head which causes acceleration and recoil in much more devastating ways. If you ever get on the ground, keep your head in contact with the ground and its almost impossible to knock you out. That crap just hurts.

    You can also knock people out with strikes to other areas, a swift blow to the back of the neck can make you loose consciousness very fast. However that can also kill you or permanently paralyze you, that is why strikes to the back of the head are not allowed in martial art competitions. Also, any time you get hit hard enough to change the acceleration of the head you can knock someone out. The jaw is just an easy, effective, and reliable target.

    Anytime the brain/head get hit hard a knockout can occur.
