What does cpu passmark mean?

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

For example,

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X is rated at 55,444. What does this number even mean?

and I'm assuming this currently is the fastest CPU in the market.

it is a Passmark rating, determined by running the Passmark software on the computer in question.

you could just read the message on their main page:

Passmark is a PC test and benchmarking program. It can be used to test a system for stability or it can be used for bragging rights(hi score) and many other tests such as a burn in test. Superposition is another test program aimed at gamers.

The unit of measurement, if there was one, would be operations performed per second.

    55,444 operations performed for second.

A CPU with a passmark of 3000 is 3 times faster than a CPU with a passmark of 1000.
