How do cops track guns used in gun murders?
So I was told that the majority of gun murders are committed by guns NOT owned by the criminals. Majority of criminals who commit gun murders do NOT use their OWN guns.
That's because if the police can find the gun, they can also find out who it belongs to.
But how can the police find a gun if the criminal does NOT leave it at the scene (like an idiot would)?
Someone uses a gun to murder another person. That "someone" takes their gun with them. How can the police track it?

They find a gun. Lets say it is a Ruger Security Six. It has a serial number on it. They check with Ruger to see what distributor they sold it to. They go to the distributor and find out what gun store he sold it to. They go to the dealer and see who he sold it to. That background check form is also a registration form which the dealer has to keep. So the dealer will be able to tell them who bought it. Then they go to that person and see if they have the gun. If they sold it, hopefully that person knows who they sold it to. Or if it was stolen then he had better of filed a stolen gun report.
