What happens if a soap opera star dies unexpectedly (like a car accident)? Since soaps air every week day, what would happen?

I'm assuming the production might come to a halt and they would probably show reruns until they can rewrite the script maybe?

Soaps tape weeks in advance.  This allows them to stop production for a few days to regroup and decide how they want to handle it.   So, they don't need to show re-runs.

Sometimes they'll say that the character went out of town, and then, some time later, the character might reappear, being played by another actor.

You should be aware of the many, many times that an actor doesn't die, but decides to leave, and they are replaced by another actor.

It depends.  Sometimes, they write them out of the show.  Other times, it's just like in a football game....Next Man Up...and there's a new actor in the role.

They would either kill the character off and change the storyline or recast

    They would likely recast.

When Kristoff St. John (Neil Winters on Y&R) suddenly died last year, the show eventually had the character die as well. They did the same thing when Jeanne Cooper passed away.

That happened on the Y&R. They had to rewrite, then they put together a memorial show highlighting his career on the show. The actor that played Neil Winters committed suicide.
