physics problem?

Imagine a balance beam with unequal arms. An earring placed in the left basket was balanced by 4.93 g of standard masses on the right. When placed in the right basket, the same earring required 14.60 g on the left to balance. 

(a) Which was the longer arm?

The left arm is longer

The right arm is longer    

(b) What is the mass of the earring?

    m*L = 4.93*R -----> L/R = 4.93/m

    m*R = 14.60*L -----> L/R = m/14.60

    4.93/m = m/14.60

    m² = 4.93*14.60 = 72.0

    m = 8.48 g <---------- (b)

    L/R = 8.48/14.60 < 1

    so Right side is longer <------- (a)

    longher arm is the right one

    earring mass m = 4.93*14.60/4.93 = 14.60 grams
