Did you ever watch a long-distance bicycle race at the Olympics.  There's this one event where everyone goes around an oval track like 1000 times.  They all ride at a very moderate speed, pacing themselves, saving their energy. Then, towards the end, someone speeds up, and from there to the end is a sprint.

I suspect long auto races are like that.  The guys race pretty well for 450 miles, keep their opposition in sight etc., but towards the end the pour it on, trying to get ahead at the very last.  So they're more likely to have accidents in the last lap.

I'm just guessing.  I don't know anything about auto racing, really.
