Why do defendants plea to life in prison to avoid the death penalty?
In many states, you effectively wont even be executed and in every state, the execution is years away at best- often decades. Life without parole seems worse. Id choose 10 years followed by execution anyday over rotting in prison for decades. The only thing I can think of is that maybe with a sentence of life, you get more freedoms in gen population prison than on death row.

The people who do that apparently actually fear death. Obviously a lot of others have figured out that death row is preferable to gen pop if you're going to get 30 or 40 years there. In California under Newsom one would stupid to not wish for death row accommodations.

On reason is that it is FAR MORE LIKELY to be released at some point if you are sentenced to life than if you are sentenced to death.

Obviously they only do it in states where they could actually get the death penalty.

Many ARE executed. Andy you don't get to choose - a jury or judge decides on what you get in places where there is the death penalty.
