Are creation myths just failed attempts at explaining our origins?

When a leader doesn't have the actual facts about something, making up a legend (especially knowing their followers can't do any research) is the best way to appear knowledgeable.

It's worse than that.  Certain myths are used to oppress others (Noah cursing his son's descendants with slavery) or solidify power (divine right of kings).

    They did explain our origins.

Of course, now we know they were all wrong, but the purpose was not science. It was gathering a nation around a common belief, and they succeeded at that.

Neither the Stone Age shamans nor Bronze Age priests, had no telescopes to observe the universe, no microscopes to see how life works, and no scientific background to even figure out the right question.

If you can convince your people that you're in direct communication with the big guy who once built Everything and who is now protecting them, you're about to get the authority, the power, the money, and all the chicks

No, they're usually allegorical in some way.

What does this have to do with astronomy and space? That's a religious question.

Creation stories were written thousands of years ago by men with no science background or data or understanding of the real world.
