Why do people say France is weak?

This rumor only started because of World War 2

When Germany initially invaded France on May 10, 1940, the French soldiers stumped the Germans dead in their tracks, while they allowed the cowardly British to evacuate.

Not to mention France held out for SIX weeks. Which is longer than every other country that got invaded by the Germans.

If anyone should have the reputation of being scared, cowardly, surrendering fools, it should be the BRITISH!

Go get an education for once before you spew false, and idiotic words from your filthy mouths.

Why is it that whenever this question is asked, which is actually fairly often, it's always asked anonymously?

How refreshing that you are not in fact anonymous because you're here to slag off the French, but because you're here to slag off the British instead.

It's very amusing that you've read a few paragraphs about one portion of the conflict and now think you're an expert on military strategy whose opinions are worthy of evaluation.

    They're not.

Before you start accusing other people of being cowards, you might want to think about the irony of you being too much of a spineless, yellow-bellied, lily-livered cur to ask this using your own screen name.

You calling ANYBODY a coward is just the pot calling the kettle black, boyo.

    Peter Gore Seer,

France Week, Its A Strong Country, Three Quarters Of France Was Never Touch By War, The French Soldiers Were Safe In Concrete Bunkers, Then On The Whole Were Safe In German War Camps, Paris Was Never Bombed, And You Say Weak, The French Campaign Saves More French Lives.

Wow, what a collection of utter willfully ignorant historical garbage.

First of all, the use of the term 'is' to refer to 80 years ago events is, well, stupid.

Next, yes, the French Army back then was poorly equipped and trained to fight a modern war of movement. The French Army of 1940 was ready to fight the war of 1918. It's just that the German Army was ready to fight a 1940 type of war.

Next, the BEF did fight, and fairly well, until they and nearby French forces were surrounded by German forces, which is why the Dunkirk evacuation became necessary. Note, as well, that that evacuation also lifted more than 100,000 French soldiers who were cut off, as well.

The USSR held out for FOUR YEARS and in doing so, BEAT the vast bulk of the German Army. Didja forget that part, sparky ? Clearly so.

Oh and the British fought the Germans in Africa for two YEARS, as well.

I think I mentioned this in another answer once, but there is an old saying (I believe it might have even been a Frenchman who said it) that, more often than not, "generals prepare to fight the last war..."

Although this remark was aimed more at illustrating how military tactics tend to lag behind military technology (formations of shoulder-to-shoulder men marching slowly against entrenched artillery well into the 19th century, for example), the same could also be said for politicians and even nations.

France gets its reputation (quite unfairly, if you study their history of warfare) because they approached WW2...which one could argue ushered in not only a new military order, but a new world order as well...with the same attitude their fathers and grandfathers did previous wars.

Changing borders and territorial swaps between European nations was commonplace for centuries.  The Alsace region of France, for example, had changed hands so many times that people joked shops sold flags with the colors of France on one side and the colors of Germany on the other.

To use a poker reference, once Germany's modern tactics overwhelmed Frances outdated defenses, leaders decided it would be better to "fold" than to put up a long-term fight.

This wasn't so much cowardice as it was a combination "modern" and "old world" pragmatism:  After the horrors of WW1, the "enlightened" attitude was that such slow and destructive conflict should be avoided for the good of the nation.  Beneath that, was the simple belief that this war, like all others before, would end and that France would get its chance to redraw the map in their favor in the next one.

The issue wasn't "weakness" so much as it was engaging in a mindset that no longer applied to modern politics and warfare.

"Not to mention France held out for SIX weeks. Which is longer than every other country that got invaded by the Germans."

    Speaking of Educations...

The Soviet Union held out for a lot more than 6 weeks, pushed back, took Berlin and helped win the war....

    Consider yourself educated....

Find those people and ask them. It's not my call to speak someone elses mind. Apparently that's something you're good at.
