another way of saying "formerly called"?

Elizabeth Tower, formerly called Clock Tower

Are there any ways of saying this without using the phrase "formerly called"?

When talking about someone who is married [usually the 'bride'] and has taken her husbands surname as her own, It will say Mrs D Bennett 'nee' Jones,  'nee' means formerly known as, because it was her 'maiden' name.
