Non-religious people, how did life and the ability to think/walk begin?

It all began with God. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

It did not without "external power" the Sun puts out all the power we needed.  Entropy is not increasing in our system as it is not closed, there is significant energy input.  (Don't know what a "chatter" is)

With an appropriate mix of substances, as existed millions of years ago before life took hold and changed the atmosphere of the Earth, all the "building block" molecules such as proteins and amino acids could form spontaneously.

They in turn could join to form more complex structures.

With the entire surface of the earth and millions of years, at times some combination to a form that could duplicate itself. That is "life".

It was probably far simpler than a present bacteria and quite possibly thousands or millions of variations formed and died out again before some combination came about that was stable and multiplied successfully.

The overall process is called Abiogenesis and all the stages through proteins, amino acids and many more complex structures combining have been demonstrated so spontaneously form in laboratory experiments.

No self-reproducing thing has been found yet,but experiments run in a few test tubes for a few years cannot compare in variety and possibilities to the entire earth for aeons, so that is not really surprising and in no way invalidates the concept.

[The "External power" is simply gravity. That caused galaxies, solar systems, suns, planets etc. to condense from scattered gas and dust.

Everything else is a natural consequence of that.]

But there is an external power, it is called the sun. There is also an internal power,  the radioactivity of the Earth's core.

As long as life has existed there's been creatures that scuttle on the sea floor. There's even a fish evolved to use its fins to propel itself against the floor. There is also a species of amphibious fish called mudskippers that crawl on muddy land. It's easy to see at this point how these fish slowly grew stronger limbs, tougher skin and became amphibians and eventually reptiles.

      How did they scuttle?

They will argue that nothing can allow something.
