The Frontier/Xterra 6cyl has a fairly common issue with a timing chain tensioner going bad or the shoe it pushes. Power is lost and noise ensues at 2K+ RPM.

Do you hear a slight rattle at cold start?

Take it to the dealer. There may be a power train warranty on the vehicle yet.

Take it to the dealer and let them fix it if it still under warranty. Could be a bad sensor.
