How do you use epoxy resin on sand without it seeping through? ?

Im working on building some terrariums and I'm looking for methods to pour epoxy resin onto sand. My problem is that the resin seeps into the sand. It discolors the sand and it makes it darker, and forces me to continually watch the epoxy to make sure it is at the right level.

Is there a type of sand or some sort of sealant I can use on it? I tried some acrylic sealant but it was from a pressured can and it was too easy to make a mess if you pressed too hard on the nozzle at all.

I know it can be done because I've seen others do it through social media. Unfortunately, the ones who have have not responded to my inquiries on how it is done, that, or they consider it a trade secret.

Thanks for your help.

Seal the sides and THEN add the sand - after the epoxy dries.
