Drowning in medical bills?

My mother is currently drowning in medical bills and has recently had to go to the ER. She’s on Social security disability she has Medicare but it’s not enough. A few years back they kicked her off medi cal because she made to much?! Is there anyway she could get help paying for her medical bills?

John was on the right track. She needs to reapply for Medi Cal to see what her spend down would be. If she has a lot of bills she might use up that spend down quite quickly. They will cover bills as much as 3 months back. If that fails, talk to the social workers at the hospital. Many hospitals have foundations that help pay the bills of people that are underinsured.

If you want to lend or give it to her, be my guest.  Otherwise, she is responsible for what her insurance does not cover.  She needs to learn to budget and not ask for services that she can't pay for.  An emergency is one thing but other services, she needs to limit - not just buy services indiscriminately.  She should also consider Medicare supplements, but that would be for the future.  They won't cover periods of time past when she did not have that insurance.

For 2020, there may be no options for your mom.  She should talk to a insurance broker who is also a medicare specialist.

For 2021, she should consider going to a medicare advantage plan.  This will replace regular medicare and likely provide 100% coverage with no or very little out of pocket expense.

She can ask the providers, they might reduce them.

You make it sound so easy. I wouldn’t have asked the question if I had the money to help.

She needs to reapply for Medi Cal, which may cover at least part of her medical costs.  No one is denied Medi Cal due to excess income. Rather, the excess income is used to compute a person's spend down.  Spend down is kind of like a deductible, but its based on income.  After the spend down is met, further medical costs will be covered by Medi Cal.

No one is denied Medi-Cal based on income?  Is that a fantasy that your Demo politicians tell you?  The income limit for most single individual households for 2020 is $17237.

She needs to talk to the billing dental the hospital. She needs to speak with a health coordinator as well with her insurance and possibly with the hospital to see if there are cheaper options available.
