What caused the coronavirus?

    You do not expand on what you mean by vaguely asking it what caused it.

    The virus belongs to a group of viruses called the corona viruses.

    This is a case of zoonosis, i.e. when a pathogen that infects a non-human animal passes into the human population which it is then capable of infecting.

    As in similar cases it probably happened at one of the markets in China where wild animals are sold. A current suspicion is it crossed from Rhinolophus affinis (Intermediate Horseshoe Bat) (see attached image).

    It took years to trace the origin of SARS so don't expect any quick answer.

    The last hypothesis I heard was that it was carried by the pangolin or scaly "anteater", whose scales are used in Chinese medicine, even though the animal is endangered.

    I heard first they thought snakes at this market where I think animals were traded but now they are more on the side of bats.
