Why do some MLS clubs have "Football Club" instead of "Soccer Club" in their name?

Football is called soccer in the US. So why are some clubs in the US recognize "football" as their sport?

Some will say that it is designed to appeal to a more "worldly" audience...others will say that it's designed to appeal to a more pretentious audience (the ones that think wearing scarves, calling uniforms "kits" and chanting in unison makes them "cooler" than "regular sports fans")

In any case, it does seem to be a move to make the American game more in line with the international one.  Part of this, I believe, is an effort to attract a higher caliber of younger international players (and keep our best players home), to improve the quality (and therefore marketability) of the MLS.

Because soccer is the slang name and football is the correct name. The correct name of the sport is Association Football.

It's more of a marketing scheme and the new generation of football in America trying to get away from the term soccer. Sporting KC, Dc United, Inter Miami, all the names are marketing schemes drawn from Europe and the world.

  • Branding. "Most' people in the US call it soccer but an increasing number are correctly calling it football (like most of the world).
