What happened to Eugenie Bouchard?

She did not play this year at the Australian Open. Why not? She used to be one of my favourite players. Is she still a professional tennis player? Is she still playing in tournaments and Grand Slams?

She failed in the qualifiers this year. It might be more mental than anything.

Like many WTA players over the past couple decades, she encountered a mix of physical problems, lifestyle issues and the mental challenges that go with them.

The popularity and profitability of the WTA has increased sharply since the 1990s...and, like it or not, a good chunk of that rise was based on a string of players marketed as much for their looks as for their talents. Bouchard was just another in a string of attractive players who became the darling of the celebrity set and, at a young age, found herself having to balance her training with parties, endorsement contracts and all the appearances required of a "star."

This is nothing new.  Even before the terrible stabbing incident, Monica Seles' game suffered because of her busy schedule appearing on chat shows dressed like Madonna...Jennifer Capriati's career was derailed when sudden fame and celebrity friends led her to the party and drug scene...and of course, Anna Kournikova remains the poster girl for "unrealized potential."

Athletic achievement takes focus and discipline.  For every Venus and Serena there are many examples of players who simply couldn't balance the distractions of fame and the requirements of sport.  For Bouchard, her ability to regain form will depend on her dedication and the influences she has around her.
