Cartography is derived from the Latin "carta" meaning chart or map and the Greek "graphein" meaning to write.  During the Age of Exploration what we call maps were called charts. These charts included reefs, bays, inlets, etc. as well as coastlines. Some charts recorded the number of fathoms around islands.

Because in French the word for "map" is "carte".  French used to be a much more influential language.

Because it's not a Gilda Radner-Bill Murrray SNL skit.

Also, "carta" means "map" or "chart" in Latin.
