How do I file w-2 tax returns?

This is my first time having to do this and I am not sure how to. I tried to ask my mom but she was rude and did not want to help me.

go to IRS.gov and choose free file then choose a free software program and file your taxes. You must have your W-2 ready and a pen and paper.

Fill out Form 1040. You can do it online or on paper.

Terrible advice. "A tax place" will charge $75 or more for a simple return and $300+ for complex returns. The person is trying to learn to do their taxes themselves to avoid paying this kind of fee every year for the rest of their lift

    Go to irs.gov

Click on "Do your taxes for free"

Choose a filing software. If your state has an income tax, make sure you choose one that will file the state tax return for free.

(OR - start on your state's website instead and follow the equivalent links)

    Follow the instructions.

They will have you type in or scan all the information from your W2, as well as other facts like whether you are a dependent.

The full instructions are here https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf

You file paperwork and that is your tax return.

Your W-2 is an informational return that is your source data for your 1040.

Wait until after mom files if you are a dependent.  Then you can go to irs.gov and check out the free file sites.
