why do vortex rings travel so far?

Why are vortex rings (toroidal vortex) so stable? How are they able to mantain their shape for so long

It depends on the amount of energy imparted to them. The higher the energy level the more stable they are and the greater the distance they can travel.

Think of smoke rings you can blow with a cigar or cigarette. They have pretty low energy so the dissipate fairly quickly.
