Do the swallows still come back to Capistrano?

Yes they do. A bit more dispersed from what I remember.

Retrofits done tin the 1990s apparently disrupted them from nesting and once disrupted they found other places to nest. There are still lots of swallows around, they just aren't nesting on the old mission. They still come back around the same time but actually seeing swallows in the spring is iffy. My picture is a cliff swallow I took in Orange County not far from there. It is the same species as those that used to nest on the Mission. Other swallows such as Tree and Barn swallows can also be seen there but they are not especially common there. That white band on his forehead tells you it is a cliff swallow.

In recent years the number of swallows returning to San Juan Capistrano has drastically decreased. The reduction is due to increased development of the area.
