The Samsung’s SUHD TVs were a great improvement to standard LEDs because of the use of Quantum Dot technology. Sony has been using it before hand, however Sony went for more natural looking colors where as Samsung went for brighter displays and wider color spectrum.

They soon realized that they had to compete OLEDs, and other brands like LG was calling their higher end LEDs that used Quantum Dot called their display Super UHD. So Samsung needed to stand out from the crowd, so they changed the name of that line up from SUHD to QLED. This not only stood out from the crowd, but also made people believe it was a different display and sounded like OLED.

Nothing really changed on the inside, it used Quantum Dots just like the SUHD’s before but now Samsung was marketing it as a premium product.

However, if I were to compare their 2019 models to their 2015 models... vastly improved. They are brighter, color volume has been increased, wider viewing area, and better picture processors.
