A chronic abcess tooth?

I was told by two different dentists that I have a chronic abcessed tooth which has no symptoms, just a slight gum tenderness at times. One says root canal the other says extraction. No one has suggested an antibiotic. Do I wait until the tooth is actually bothering me or what?

If you wait until the abcess bothers you it might be too late. It the abscess ruptures it could cause a severe infection, so don't wait to do something about it.
