Because they are Separate from the English.   Catholic.  Completely different peoples. The Republicans fought oppressions, beatings, tyranny 800 years. They could even be Jailed if they spoke their Native Language in public. Fought until 1921 when they won  their freedom. Many lost lives, like Michael Colllins  * , innocent civilians machine gunned by English.

The Ulstermen are mostly Protestant, like England. even then, there is a "pocket" of Catholics still near Belfast, Londonderry;  fighting for separation. This is the modern  "troubles". Northern Ireland is a Battle Zone; looked like Beirut. Republican Ireland (Eire) is very peaceful.

Now, you think they should give it Back?

    * technically he was assassinated  after the revolution but still a martyr. Like Villa gunned down  in Mexico in  1923 but still a Revolutionary hero.
