During WWI, you could be sent to prison for speaking against the war.

Off the top of my head, hate crimes are subject to more severe penalty. One's speech can be used to determine the hate.

Incitement-  This offense is created by section 7 of the Official Secrets Act 1920.

In recent years Political Correctness has been limiting free speech. Most of it is self imposed but it is so widespread that it is just as real as if it were the law because people who defy it are often fired from their jobs even teachers who are supposed to teach what is true and journalists who are also supposed to speak the truth but they hand cuff themselves with Political Correctness. And it is worse in the UK than in the US because they have no constitution that protects free speech as the US does. Also conspiracy theories which have exploded since the Assassination of JFK and the Warren Report have muddled the truth as have blogs on the i Internet. The mainstream news in the US not only hand cuffs itself with Political Correctness but heavily censors the news in two ways by blurring images and parts of images under the pretense of protecting people in the image or of protecting the viewer from what they deem offensive. They decide what people might consider offensive which has the affect of sanitizing the news. I f the had been done during the Vietnam war the truth may never have been known by the public because it was the horrific images of a naked girl burned by napalm and a South Vietnamese general shooting a Vietcong in the head with a pistol that helped turn the public against the war and no such images were allowed ever again on American TV so the real horror of war is not known with some exceptions when it is deemed part of a particular news source advantageous to their political agenda such as pictures of people suffering from a poison gas attack in Syria. Why are these images shown and others blurred out as too offensive to show? The answer is they are not reporting the news they are using a political agenda to influence their audience to think the way they do and this is propaganda not news. And the master of propaganda was Goebbels a Nazi in Germany in WWII.
