What is the meaning of these covers of "The Catcher in the Rye"?

I'm sorry if there's already an answer for this question, but all the ones I've seen were for the new cover. Thank you so much in advance! :)

Holden refers to the red hunting hat and smoking in the text. The hat represents individuality and uniqueness. It symbolizes the confidence, self esteem that he hankers after. Smoking is part of his rebellious nature and birds are a recurring motif.
