What is the punishment for an underage, accidental murder? Is there a punishment at all?

For example, what would a 17 year old be charged if he was like running with scissors and someone came out of nowhere and he accidentally stabbed them and they died? This is so random but I'm wondering for a book I'm writing haha.

That is an accident, not a murder. Look up some definitions.

Real authors write about what they know.

A murder is never accidental. Ask your middle school English teacher to explain it to you and show you how the dictionary works.

Your scenario is completely preposterous, by the way.

Depends on where you live. In most of the US, they'd be charged as an adult with involuntary manslaughter or negligent homicide. In my state, the punishment for negligent homicide is up to five years in prison.
