Why are jobs so strict about appearance? Any reasonable person should know that someone with tattoos can still be a good lawyer or...?

a receptionist can still have coloured hair and do her job.

If you think less of a person just because of their appearance instead of their personality then you're quite narrow-minded and superficial.

Update:

@Anonymous, looking boring isn't good for your mental health. It's BORING. Like you.

Update 2:

humans naturally crave variety.

Tattoos are fine as long as they can cover it. Apart from that, it is all about representation.

They don't want to upset to meny clients/customers.

One company I worked for they would ask one of the IT guys to wear a long sleved shirt when they knew important clients were coming in as he had tatoos all up his arms, the rest of the time they were happy with him wearing a t-shirt.

What I think you don't understand is that a person's appearance is a reflection of their life style and attitude.  Employers also have to consider their clientele.  They do not want employees who will lose them business.  I'm sure there are many places which do not care what image they present to the public; surely you can find one of them but are less likely to do so in the field of law.  It's about the image and if you can't understand that then perhaps the law isn't for you.  You want to work for a law firm (and many other types of businesses) then make sure your tats are covered up.

Also not all humans crave variety; many humans prefer for conform to social norms.  In fact, I suspect MOST humans prefer to conform to social norms.

Lawyer women seem to look very sharp, pretty, and in shape, it's incredible how well they look, well except for prosecutors for some reason but they still dress sharp. Pretty much anything with a camera or a big audience. Those women that work inside the banks and those walking around trying to apply or work for big corporate looking places have an unusually high amount of value in their appearances too, even surpassing the dressing sharp requirements, they all practically look like models.

because public perception affects how customers respond to your business.

if you don't look professional, then customers will assume that you don't know how to do your job, and they will go elsewhere.

that's how the real world works.

You probably wouldn't want to work for anyone like that, right?

The truth is, even though tattoos have become much more mainstream in the past 20 years, they are not acceptable in many professions. Just don't get tattoos where they can't be covered up for a professional image.

Narrow minded and superficial are their customers. If you look like a drug addict and some other company looks professional. Who do you think will get the business?

Looking trashy isn't good for business and businesses want to make money.
