Why Travel So Far?

Back in the 70's I took an upper-level physics course in time travel (yep!) at PSU taught by a visiting professor from Oxford. Temporal mechanics gives me a headache, but mysteries give me an even bigger one. These days I have to wonder, why would an English physics professor go on sabbatical just to teach an esoteric physics course in a backwater American city like Portland? Hypothetically..?

Professors typically go to different colleges to do research with many different scientists and use many different labs. That is how they learn about other scientists work and verify their results. Sometimes they teach a class while they are there to make extra money, but that is not their main reason for going to another college.
