You need to buy 3 bottles of food colour. .. 1 Red .. 1 Yellow .. 1 Blue.
Make up enough cake batter to make 6 thin sponges (using a 8'' round cake tin).
Just doubling the recipie for one sponge cake is usually enough.
Divide the cake mix into 6 portions and dye one batch Red, one Yellow and one Blue .. and then make Orange, Green and Purple by mixing Red and Yellow to get Orange .. Yellow and Blue to get Green .. and Blue and Red to get Purple.
Cook the 6 cakes .. in batches .. and then stack them together (sandwiched with butter icing) .. in the order Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple .. and then ice the cake.

follow direction for the many "rainbow" or "ombre" cakes that are on line Or for something a bit different look for a "Zebra Cake" Usually it is 2 colors of cake batter but more could be used and poured in the same way.

You could try googling 'rainbow cake', choosing a recipe from the dozen or so websites that tell you how to make one, and then following the directions.
