What type of tree is this?

I saw this at Clemson University on the John C. Calhoun/ Clemson Estate in South Carolina. I used to know the name of the tree years ago, out in areas where they get lots of rainfall it is considered invasive, and often develops a hollow trunk. I always thought the tree was cool. I believe it originates in east asia. Let me know if any of you have ideas.

Posted earlier but some thought it was a sycamore or a plane tree. Yahoo only allows one image so hopefully this will be better.

The large leaves and light, smooth bark remind me of a Sycamore tree.
