You have made friends before? You should be able to make friends again. DO research the culture, non-verbal communication, standards of courtesy for the country you are going to! And participate in school activities. Go out & about to learn your way around the area where you live & study. Work on speaking the language - study up before you go, expose yourself to the language daily (youtubes, DVD movies, books, TV shows, news reports, etc.) to help prevent or limit "airport panic" on arrival when suddenly surrounded by people speaking that language. Interact with your host family, contribute to doing household chores & family activities, etc.

It all depends on where you come from and what is "abroad". Every culture has different standards, customs, etc.

That said, I don't think you'll have any major problems. Enjoy! 🙂

    2 ways

    1) be more outgoing, show people that you are friendly, engaging, smile

    2) Be yourself as people can see straight through the fake sh*t of no.1 easily
