My 15-year-old daughter has braces and the orthodontist claims that she has bad oral hygiene. I am mad at my daughter. How do I handle this?

She just got braces and I don't want to pay for them if she won't take care of herself. I try to nag her about that and also nag her to lose weight too.

    Nagging never works.

Praise the behavior you want to see

I'd say she had terrible dental hygiene long before braces.

But I'd watch, listen and things don't happen till teeth are brushed...

The phone.  Take it away till teeth are brushed

    A ride to school...brush first

Nothing happens till teeth are brushed.

I'd make her think about you forgot one thing...

Why be mad. You could encourage her instead.

Some kids have zero oral hygiene skills, and don't care.

At 15 she should be aware that bad hygiene will ruin her teeth and waste all the misery of braces. If she won't take care if her teeth, have the braces taken off and save all the rest of that money.

Buy her a waterpik and a big container sweet tasting mouthwash. Kids love water pics with mouthwash

Tell her to care for them proper or they come off and her teeth will be as she sees them and you no longer have to pay for teeth that could be straight but rotten or full of holes.

by getting her to brush teeth everyday and floss
