When we just met we were like a couple of primates but in the end we are nothing more than a couple of apes.  Oh you can try to call us human if you want.  That is nice of you.

Humans and apes are both primates. But a human is not an ape. An ape is any of a group of anthropoid primates characterized by long arms, a broad chest, and the absence of a tail, comprising the family Pongidae (great ape), which includes the chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan, and the family Hylobatidae (lesser ape), which includes the gibbon and siamang.

Humans are classified as primates, in the mammalian order Primates, which also include monkeys, tarsiers, lemurs, and lorises. We are classified in our own family, family Hominidae by most anthropologists. However, some other scientists also include apes in the family Hominidae. That means apes are considered hominids, or humans. Gorillas, chimps and orangutans therefore are not apes,  but humans, to these scientists. That is weird to say the least. Apes were classified in the family Pongidae by almost all sane scientists, but some nut cases want to classify apes and humans in the same family, and that is why those nuts now classify apes in the family Hominidae, which was reserved for all tailless primates that walked on 2 legs and shared a common ancestor. Now Hominidae includes both 4-legged animals and bipeds, according to the crazy nuts. A vast majority of sane scientists still exclude apes from Hominidae.

    Both and many more groups!

    Humans belong to:

    Genus H0mo aka human

Like other extinct  human species (Neanderthals,  erectus, etc.)

    Subtribe  Hominina

Like other non-human upright walking apes (australopithecines  etc. all extinct)

    Tribe Hominini

Along with chimps, our most closely related animals

    (...)

    Family  Hominidae aka great apes

Along with  chimps, gorillas, and orangutans

    Superfamily Hominoidea aka apes

Both great and lesser apes (Gibbons...)

Infraorder Simiiforme aka anthropoids, aka simian, aka monkeys sensu lato (ie. That includes apes)

    All monkeys and apes(...)

Order Primates (from "primacy " because it's our order! ;-)

Anthropoids, plus tarsiers and lorises, plus lemurs.

And we are also mammals, tetrapods, vertebrates, etc.

The Hominidae, whose members are known as great apes or hominids, are a taxonomic family of primates that includes eight extant species in four genera: Pongo, the Bornean, Sumatran and Tapanuli orangutan; Gorilla, the eastern and western gorilla; Pan, the common chimpanzee and the bonobo; and humans.

Apes are primates. Somewhere along our evolution, pre humans separated from "apes". Humans are primates though, there's many different types of primates, apes (chimps, gorillas, orangutans etc), monkeys (small breed monkeys and larger monkeys like baboons and a lot more), humans, lemurs, etc.

We are both.  'Primate' is a wider category than just apes.  It includes monkeys, lemurs, lorises, also apes and us.  Primaries have flexible hands and feet with opposing digits for grasping.  They have good eyesight, and well-developed brains.

Apes are one category of primates.  And we are a variety of ape.
